Well, it's already three months into the new year, so i figured i should get around to starting up a new thread about the various things Deathworld as an entity gets up to during the year.

i suppose the first thing to talk about would be the three television appearances i was a part of during late January and early February. They were all pretty cool, as i got to showcase my artwork a bit, even if only one of the appearances actually had me drawing DW characters. The first two instances involved local affiliate stations and their morning news broadcast remote location shots. (ie. their scene reporters that go out to local businesses and organizations to interview those involved) These were a blast, even if i was forced to get up far earlier than i like to participate. Basically myself and the other artist each drew a single page comic based off the suggestions the reporter gave us. The first one is visible here, the second one shown here. As for the third TV appearance, this was an actual interview done by a local cable station in regards to local cartoonists and the communities they participate in, and i was specifically contacted for this one. This is the only one i've actually seen so far, and i came across as fairly interesting and articulate. They also showed me drawing a picture of Stephan, and we talked a little bit about Deathworld and how it got started. Very cool.

Yesterday was another 12 Hour Comic Challenge at my local comic book store. Sort a mini-version of the 24 Hour Comic day, we had to create 12 a page comic in twelve hours straight. As with the previous times i've done this type of event, it was a lot of fun. I was able to finish all twelve pages and threw in a cover to boot. As for the comic itself, it was a little different from the usual Deathworld fare. Oh, it had all the regular characters we know and like, but this one went waaaay outside the usual continuity, as i went and killed off all of the characters by the end of the comic! See, the story i went with was a take-off of the old-school Mortal Kombat arcade game, where we get a fighting tournament all the characters are forced to enter, instigated by the Overseer (because he was bored and wanted something to amuse him). Most of the fight scene were pretty goofy, and generally involved the characters smack-talking their opponents before being taken out in a silly or stupid fashion. Heh. i dunno, i suppose that's why i like these stand-alone comics, it allows me to do stories i'd never consider (or be unable to do) for the main continuity.

So, the last weekend of March was the Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show, and i was there selling stuff. Mainly the usual goods like buttons, comics and postcard prints, however i also did some sketches and had a new promo sketchbook that featured some of my recent work. It was a pretty good time. i don't really do these shows expecting to make a lot of money (because i usually don't - i made about $15 this time around if memory serves), rather i enjoy hanging out with all the artists that i've become friends with but don't get to see very often. We buy each other's books and stuff, joke around, and generally have a good time. This show was no exception. i also get to chat a little with the crowds that come to these shows. A couple of guys from the local Star Wars cosplay group asked about my comic, i chatted with a cool dude in full "Aliens" marine get-up, and i talked with some of the regular customers of the comic store i work at who didn't realize that i draw my own comics. At the very least by doing these local shows i get my name and face out in public and hopefully interest a few folks to check out more of my work online.
Anyways, the attached picture is me at my booth in the Artist's Alley from the show.

You know perhaps someday your comic will be more famous and we will all have to say "I knew that guy!" and they will go "Like sure you did".  Tongue
