first off, thanks for joining the forum!!
to be honest, this new system is a little different from the standard phpBB
that most forums use, so i'm not too surpised you had some difficulty.

To change your Avatar pic:
Go to the Profile section (hit the profile button at the top of any page)
On the left side of the main Profile page is a column.  Under Modify Profile,
there is an option, Forum Profile Information.
That is where you can pick one of the avatars I've made, or upload one of your own.
